Where Experiences Heal
The Healing Fields Foundation Training Clinic expands access to affordable psychotherapy while creating meaningful clinical training opportunities for the next generation of healing professionals.
Clients receive care from graduate-level trainees who provide psychotherapy under the supervision of qualified licensed mental health professionals. This model allows HFF to offer care at a reduced rate while giving developing clinicians the opportunity to build clinical skill, judgment, and experience within a closely supervised environment.
An important part of this model is understanding that the HFF clinic is a time-limited training program. The clinician you begin therapy with is completing a graduate training placement and will eventually graduate from that program.
Rather than treating that transition as an unexpected interruption, HFF incorporates continuity planning into the treatment process from the beginning.
Clients entering the HFF Training Clinic are initially offered 10 psychotherapy sessions.
Ten sessions provide an initial period in which you and your clinician can:
● identify the primary concerns bringing you to therapy;
● clarify treatment goals;
● understand important patterns, relationships, or circumstances affecting your well-being;
● develop new skills, perspectives, and resources; and
● determine what type of support may be helpful going forward.
Ten sessions do not necessarily represent the end of treatment.
If additional care would be clinically helpful, you and your clinician may request an extension of services. Extensions are considered based on clinical need, the clinician’s remaining training period, supervision recommendations, clinician availability, and HFF program capacity.
Because HFF is a training clinic, extensions cannot be guaranteed indefinitely.
Every trainee has an anticipated graduation or completion date associated with their clinical training program.
As that date approaches, your clinician will begin discussing transition planning with you. Whenever possible, these conversations will occur early enough for you to consider your choices and make a thoughtful decision about what comes next.
The goal is not simply to “terminate” care because a training placement ends. The goal is to help you identify the best available pathway for continuity of care.
Depending upon your clinical needs, financial circumstances, insurance coverage, and your clinician’s professional pathway after graduation, several options may be available.
Continue With Your Current Clinician
Some HFF trainees may have an opportunity to continue practicing after graduation through an approved post-graduate clinical setting and supervision arrangement.
When this is available, you may choose to continue therapy with the clinician with whom you have already established a therapeutic relationship.
Because the clinician will no longer be providing services through the HFF student training program, the fee structure will change. Clients should anticipate a self-pay fee of approximately $120 per session, although the actual fee will be confirmed before the transition occurs.
Continuation with the same clinician is dependent upon the clinician’s availability, legal eligibility to provide services after graduation, employment or placement, supervision arrangements, and the policies of the practice in which the clinician continues working.
Remain With HFF
You may choose to remain a client of the Healing Fields Foundation and begin working with another HFF trainee.
When appropriate, HFF will facilitate a thoughtful transfer of care so the incoming clinician has sufficient information to understand your treatment history, goals, progress, and continuing needs.
Clients who remain within the HFF Training Clinic may continue receiving services at the applicable HFF reduced clinic rate.
A change in clinician can sometimes feel significant. When possible, your current clinician will help prepare you for the transition and support the transfer process.
Use Insurance for Continuing Care
For some clients, graduation may create an opportunity to transition from reduced-fee HFF care into insurance-supported treatment.
If your clinician transitions into an eligible role with Joya Sagrada Family Therapy (JSFT) or another participating practice, insurance benefits may be available.
Depending on the clinician’s registration and credentialing status, supervising clinician, your health plan, medical necessity requirements, and payer authorization, JSFT may be able to provide services through plans including:
● Aetna
● Cigna
● Optum
● UnitedHealthcare
● CenCal/Medi-Cal
Insurance coverage is never guaranteed solely because a clinician or supervisor participates with an insurance company. Benefits and clinician eligibility will be verified as part of the transition process.
Transition to Another Community Provider
You are also free to continue care outside of HFF.
If another therapist, specialty provider, community program, or level of care would better meet your needs, your clinician can help identify appropriate referrals and support the transition.
Affordable training clinics make therapy available to people who might otherwise have difficulty accessing care. They also necessarily include periods of transition as clinicians complete their education and move into the next stage of professional development.
We believe clients deserve to know that from the beginning.
Our commitment is not that your clinician will remain your therapist indefinitely.
Our commitment is that we will help you plan what comes next.
Throughout your care, we will work with you to consider your clinical needs, therapeutic relationships, financial circumstances, insurance options, and available resources so that transitions can occur as intentionally and responsibly as possible.

HFF provides supervised therapists to serve in clearly defined co-facilitation roles within retreats and other immersive experiences. Co-facilitators offer social-emotional support, help create containment during vulnerable moments, and support corrective emotional experiences through grounded, attuned presence. Their role is not to provide therapy within the program, but to strengthen participant support, maintain appropriate boundaries, and help connect participants with clinical care when needed.

HFF offers customizable group education workshops designed to support learning, connection, and practical skill-building. Programs can be tailored to topics such as relationship dynamics, stress management, parenting, performance improvement, and resilience. Workshops are educational rather than therapeutic and are designed to give groups useful tools they can apply in everyday life.
HFF provides individual and couples therapy from our mental health offices in Atascadero, CA with online sessions also available for greater accessibility to California clients.
Co-facilitation and group education services can be delivered on-site at a partner organization’s location or through secure two-way video conferencing.
